Beer Review: Kona Brewing Co. Big Wave Golden Ale

History of Big Wave Golden Ale

Brewed by Kona Brewing Co. in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Big Wave Golden Ale was first introduced in the mid-1990s. Designed to reflect the laid-back surf culture of the islands, the beer was inspired by the legendary waves of Makaha Beach. Originally a local favorite, it expanded to the U.S. mainland in 2012 and is now available in over 30 countries worldwide.

Kona Brewing Co. crafted this ale to be a smooth, easy-drinking beer that captures the essence of Hawaiian life — relaxed, refreshing, and full of tropical flavor.

The Pour

Big Wave pours a clear golden straw colour, immediately invoking thoughts of sunny beaches and warm days. It forms a soft white head that dissipates fairly quickly, leaving behind a light lacing on the glass. Visually, it’s crisp, clean, and inviting — exactly what you’d expect from a golden ale.

Aroma and Taste

Aroma:
Big Wave opens with an inviting tropical aroma — think pineapple, mango, and a hint of passionfruit. There’s also a subtle bready sweetness from the malt, giving it a well-rounded nose.

Taste:
On the palate, this ale is light-bodied and very carbonated, offering a crisp mouthfeel. The tropical fruit character follows through, with notes of citrus and mild mango, balanced by a clean malt backbone. However, it lacks body and depth, which makes it feel a bit thin compared to other golden ales.

My Verdict

I’m giving Kona Big Wave Golden Ale a 3 out of 5. It’s highly drinkable and crisp, making it perfect for warm weather or casual sipping. The carbonation gives it a lively texture, but it falls short on complexity and mouthfeel. While refreshing, it lacks the richness or depth that more robust golden ales deliver.

Would I drink it again? Yes, especially on a beach day — but it’s more of a casual thirst-quencher than a standout craft beer.
