North East Beer Review

A bargain beer for today’s review and this one barely cost £1 for the can. Scads Brewing Co is the brewery and the theme is their premium lager called Cruizr. I always like to try new beers especially when they are quite cheap. I go into trying every cheap beer knowing that there is a likely chance that it won’t be the best. However, it is still cheap and another one to add to my consumed beer list. So how did Cruizr get on? During this review I will cover the history of this beer and brewery, the pour, the taste and aroma and finally my verdict.

“Born to Travel”

Scads Brewing Co is a beer company which is based in Winslade Park, Clyst St Mary, Exeter. The beer was incorporated in June 2025. Scads Brewing Co is described as a “next-generation beer brand” that is aimed at drinkers who live a fit and modern lifestyle. It adorns the slogan “Born to Travel, Built to Standout” which points to idea of the brand marketing for those like travelling and discovery. Scads has unique range of beers which range from 0% Chillr, 3.4% Driftr, 5% Cruizr, 8% Trakr, 12% Escapr, 16% Roamr, 18% Advtr and finally 20% Xplor. This would suggest that Scads positions itself as a broad beer brand rather than a small craft brewery. This company also has 10 warehouses across 24 countries which has international expansion emphasis and the beer company has stated that there is an interest across Europe, Asia and Africa.

Cruizr is a 5% lager which sits in the middle ground of the Scads lineup. Appearing to have entered the market late 2025, there isn’t much publicly known information about Cruizr other than the beer being shown as a commercial proposition. Although, on the can it does state that Cruizr is brewed by Brasserie Goudale on behalf of Scads Brewing Co. Unfortunately I don’t have anymore information to go off.

A typical golden lager pour

Cruizr pours a bright, pale golden colour which has excellent clarity. A thick bubbly white head forms which surprisingly lasts the duration of the session. A degree of lacing was left down the glass. The carbonation is lively with consistent streams of bubbles climbing up the glass. Overall, this is a pretty ordinary lager pour which has a crisp and refreshing appearance.

A light but restrained flavour profile.

Aroma

The aromatics of Cruizr is light and relatively clean. Firstly, there is notes of grain and light cracker. This is followed by a subtle grassy to herbal aroma note which suggests a moderate hop presence. Although not the most hop forward, Cruizr still gives the impression of a crisp and refreshing brew.

Taste

On the palate, Cruizr delivers a standard lager experience, nothing special really. There is an initial malt sweetness which is that of a bread to biscuit note. There is a very mild hop bitterness which helps give the beer a dry finish and to be honest I felt this was relatively clean. The mouthfeel is light. Overall, this was drinkable but it was certainly nothing to shout about. There was definite lack of depth and it really reminded me of like a Budweiser. It will do the job but nothing brilliant.

Time for my verdict.

To conclude my review I feel that the concept of Scads is cool and appears to go down the line of Oranjeboom by offering strengths up to 20%. I just feel they certainly need to branch out their styles as more and more people are drinking beer other than lager. Cruizr was ok but nothing special but having contracted a brewery like Brasserie Gondale, this could have more potential moving over styles. Thats just my opinion and as any new brewery goes I wish them the best of luck in the future. However, for my rating on Cruizr in particular I have to give it a 2.75 out of 5. Cheers
