Steam Brew Imperial IPA Review: Bold Flavor on a Budget

If you’re a fan of big, hoppy beers and curious about what’s new in the European craft beer scene, the Steam Brew Imperial IPA is one to try. Brewed in Germany by Privatbrauerei Eichbaum, this striking Imperial IPA combines old-world brewing tradition with steampunk-inspired branding and modern hop-forward character. Here’s everything you need to know—from its history to how it pours, smells, and tastes—and my honest verdict.

The History of Steam Brew Imperial IPA

The Steam Brew range was launched in 2018 by Privatbrauerei Eichbaum, one of Germany’s oldest breweries, founded in 1679 in Mannheim. Eichbaum introduced the Steam Brew line to tap into the growing global demand for craft beer. With bold artwork and character-driven labels, each Steam Brew beer is part of a larger steampunk universe.

Distributed primarily through Lidl supermarkets across Europe, Steam Brew offers craft beer enthusiasts affordable, flavorful brews with a unique visual identity. The Imperial IPA is the strongest in the lineup, boasting an alcohol content of 7.8% ABV and a punchy 70 IBU.

The Pour: A Bold First Impression

Pouring the Steam Brew Imperial IPA is an experience in itself. It arrives in a strikingly designed 500ml can, and when poured, reveals a:

  • Deep amber to reddish-copper hue
  • Moderate haze typical of unfiltered ales
  • Thick, off-white head with strong retention
  • Good carbonation that brings the aroma alive and leaves attractive lacing on the glass

This beer looks like it means business—and it does.

Aroma & Taste: Citrus Punch Meets Malty Backbone

Aroma

The nose is full of character:

  • Citrus zest (orange peel, grapefruit)
  • Tropical fruit (mango, apricot)
  • Pine and floral undertones
  • A touch of sweet malt and a subtle alcohol warmth

It’s aromatic without being overpowering, with hops taking center stage.

Taste

The flavor profile closely follows the aroma:

  • First sip hits with bold hop bitterness and juicy citrus notes
  • The mid-palate delivers a malty backbone with hints of caramel, biscuit, and toasted bread
  • Finish is dry, bitter, and warming from the high ABV

At 70 IBUs, it leans bitter, but the malt helps keep it from being one-dimensional.

My Verdict: 3.5 out of 5

The Steam Brew Imperial IPA is a surprisingly robust and flavorful beer for its price point. It’s not the most refined Imperial IPA on the market, but it delivers solid value with its punchy hop character, steampunk flair, and respectable ABV.

Pros:

  • Excellent value for money
  • Bold hop aroma and flavor
  • Visually appealing pour and packaging

Cons:

  • Slight imbalance with bitterness
  • Alcohol warmth can feel a bit aggressive
  • Some inconsistency reported between batches

Overall: If you’re looking for a wallet-friendly craft beer with attitude, the Steam Brew Imperial IPA is worth a try. I rate it 3.5 out of 5.
