When it comes to standout beers that surprise and delight, Jaffa Gaffa by Firebrick Brewery in Blaydon-on-Tyne is one that truly deserves the spotlight. With its vibrant orange twist on the traditional Kölsch style, this beer has become one of my all-time favorites. In this review, I’ll dive into the history of the brewery, the pour, taste and aroma, and finally, my personal verdict.
The History of Firebrick Brewery
irebrick Brewery was founded in 2012 in Blaydon-on-Tyne, Tyne and Wear, a town rich in industrial heritage. The name “Firebrick” is a tribute to the region’s 19th-century brickmaking legacy, particularly that of Sir Joseph Cowen Sr., a prominent industrialist and Member of Parliament. The brewery began with a modest 2.5-barrel kit previously used by Bull Lane Brewing Co., before expanding in 2014 to a 15-barrel plant to meet growing local demand.
Since its inception, Firebrick Brewery has established itself as a staple of the North East beer scene. Their core philosophy blends local pride with traditional brewing methods, evident in their Heritage and Mystical ranges. Jaffa Gaffa is part of that journey—modern, distinctive, and proudly regional.
The Pour

Pouring Jaffa Gaffa is a small ritual in itself. This beer opens up with a lively carbonation that fills the glass with a steady, fine fizz. In appearance, it’s instantly striking—a golden-orange hue that glows with vibrancy, topped with a frothy white head that gently recedes to a delicate lacing. The clarity and energy in the pour hint at the refreshment to come. Whether served in a classic Kölsch stange or a narrow pint glass, it looks as crisp and inviting as any premium lager.
Taste and Aroma
The first thing to notice is the aroma—bright and zesty with unmistakable citrus notes, particularly orange zest, rising above a clean malt base. There’s a subtle floral hint in the background, evoking the gently fruity esters typical of Kölsch-style yeast.
On the palate, Jaffa Gaffa is smooth and supremely drinkable. It delivers a delicate interplay of flavors: light malt sweetness sets the stage before citrus takes the lead, offering a refreshing orange burst that feels natural rather than artificial. The Kölsch influence is clear in its dry, crisp finish, which is both satisfying and clean. There’s just enough bitterness to balance the sweetness, and the carbonation adds a sparkling touch that enhances every sip. The result is a beer that’s deceptively simple, layered in nuance, and utterly enjoyable from start to finish.
My Verdict
Jaffa Gaffa is, without question, one of my favorite beers of all time. It’s rare to find a beer that merges innovation with drinkability so effortlessly. Firebrick Brewery has taken a classic Kölsch foundation and elevated it with a touch of citrus creativity that never feels gimmicky. It’s a beer I can return to time and time again and still find something to appreciate.
Rating: 5 out of 5.
If you haven’t yet experienced Jaffa Gaffa, I can’t recommend it highly enough—whether you’re a Kölsch lover, a lager enthusiast, or simply someone looking for a refreshingly original pint brewed with care and character.
