If you’re a fan of juicy, hazy IPAs, First & Last Brewery’s Spectrum IPA deserves your attention. Brewed in the heart of Northumberland, this beer marks a major milestone for the brewery and delivers a tropical punch that NEIPA lovers will appreciate. In this review, we’ll explore the history behind Spectrum IPA, how it pours, its aroma and flavour profile, and why it earned a solid 4 out of 5 in my book.
The History Behind Spectrum IPA
Spectrum IPA is a special release from First & Last Brewery, based in Bellingham, Northumberland. This New England-style IPA was brewed to celebrate a significant achievement for the brewery—their 500th brew. That’s a major milestone, and Spectrum reflects everything First & Last has learned over years of crafting modern, hop-forward beers.
At 6% ABV, Spectrum showcases a bold, juicy hop character with a smooth, hazy body. It features a standout combination of BRU‑1, Citra, and Galaxy hops, which bring layers of tropical fruit and citrus to the fore. Its oat-heavy malt bill not only gives it a velvety texture but also helps amplify the vibrant hop aromas that define the New England IPA style.
The Pour – From Can to Glass

Pouring Spectrum IPA from the can is a visual treat. It hits the glass with a dense, opaque haze—a hallmark of the NEIPA style. The colour is a rich, glowing sunset orange, with a slight golden hue that catches the light beautifully.
It settles beneath a fluffy, white head that clings gently to the glass. The carbonation is soft but active, lifting those juicy hop aromas right from the start. From first glance, it’s clear this beer was designed to be a sensory experience.
Taste & Aroma – Tropical and Smooth
Aroma
The aroma is lush and fruit-forward. You’re immediately hit with notes of ripe peach, mango, and citrus zest, thanks to the dynamic hop trio. Beneath that is a faintly sweet malt scent—oats and a touch of caramel—that rounds everything out beautifully.
Taste
On the palate, Spectrum IPA delivers exactly what the nose promises. There’s an explosion of tropical fruit flavours—peach, pineapple, and a whisper of passion fruit. The oat-rich malt base gives the beer a pillowy, soft mouthfeel, making it incredibly drinkable. Bitterness is mild and well-balanced, just enough to prevent the sweetness from dominating.
The finish is smooth and clean, with a juicy aftertaste that lingers just long enough to invite another sip. It’s a modern, flavour-forward take on the hazy IPA that doesn’t overcomplicate things.
Final Verdict – 4 out of 5
Spectrum IPA is an impressive brew and a fitting tribute to First & Last Brewery’s 500th batch. It checks all the boxes for a great New England IPA: hazy, juicy, soft on the palate, and packed with tropical hop character.
I’m giving it a solid 4 out of 5. It’s not just a celebration beer—it’s a genuinely enjoyable NEIPA that showcases the brewery’s skill and love for the style. If you’re into hazy beers that balance fruity intensity with drinkable finesse, Spectrum IPA should definitely be on your radar.
