Rivington Brewing Co Black and White Movie was a beer I was not supposed to try. I had ordered a different Rivington beer however due to an issue I ended up with this one. I have never had a beer from Rivington Brewing Co and by utter coincidence I ended up trying my favourite type of ale when trying a new brewery. This Lancashire based brewery was on my bucket list for a long time. I have heard good things from Rivington so during the course of this review I will cover the history, the pour, the taste and aroma and finally what I think about this Hazy Pale.
A family started brewery
Founded in 2014, Rivington Brewing Co started from very modest beginnings comprising from home brew experiments. Created by Ben Stubbs and his brother in law Mike Richardson, they were originally based in Cuncliffe Farm, Chorley. In 2020, they relocated to a bigger site called Home Farm overlooking the Lower Rivington Reservoir. The site includes a taproom and brewery.
In 2024, Rivington produced around 2500 hectolitres and has a 30 barrel store. They forged their identity around hop forward beers such as Hazy and DDH styles. They often experiment with different hop styles and often head collaborations and limited edition beers. Rivington has a strong community focus often organising walking, cycling and runnings clubs whilst also supporting local pubs and landlords.
Black and White Movie is hazy pale ale which has an ABV of 5.4%. The hops used in this particular beer are Kohatu, Hallertau Callista and Amarillo Cyro. Black and White Movie is also vegan friendly whilst combining the hops from the USA, Germany and New Zealand.
A typical hazy pour

When poured, I could immediately notice the opaqueness from the hazy ale, along with its golden straw colour. A foamy head formed which lingered for quite awhile during consumption. It left quite a bit of lacing around the glass. Overall, it was a lively beer with a decent amount of carbonation. Very inviting indeed.
A tropical taste and aroma
When you crack open the can, the flavours are released and I immediately noticed a tropical aroma comprising if pineapple and passionfruit. There was also a mixture of citrus and berries. Culminating in notes of grapefruit, tangerine and blackcurrant. Towards the end I noticed a pine like aroma. Black and White Movie is a pleasant smelling beer.
When first taking a sip of this hazy pale, I was hit with an upfront taste of tropical and citrus notes. Mid palate I could notice a berry like taste which was more consistent to blackberry. Towards the end there was resinous taste reminiscent of pine and perhaps a citrus finish. This had a gentle bitterness throughout which made it refreshing along with the smoothness which consequently seemed medium bodied. Overall, a smooth and refreshing tipple.
Time for my verdict
To bring this review to a close I want to first mention Rivington. It is a brewery I will most definitely try again. Although, Black and White Movie is not my favourite hazy pale ale, it definitely was high quality and I could taste the effort that was put in to crafting this brew. This was a well balanced and medium bodied, to add to this it was quite refreshing. The hops used were unique to the beer as a lot of the time Citra dominates. Overall, I will rate this a solid 4 out of 5. I would recommend this beer to anyone who is a fan of a hazy or New England IPA. Cheers
