Kona Brewing Co. Longboard Island Lager – A Crisp But Underwhelming Sip

If you’re a fan of light, sessionable lagers or you’re simply hunting for an easy-drinking beach beer, you’ve probably come across Kona Brewing Co.’s Longboard Island Lager. With its Hawaiian branding and relaxed island vibe, this beer promises a chill escape in every sip. But does it live up to the laid-back legend? Let’s dive into the pour, the profile, and the verdict.

A Brief History of Longboard Island Lager

Kona Brewing Company was founded in 1994 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, by father-and-son duo Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa. Their vision was to craft island-inspired beers that captured the Aloha spirit. One of their most iconic creations, Longboard Island Lager, was introduced in 2002 and quickly became a staple in their lineup.

Inspired by the legendary longboard surfers of Waikiki Beach and brewed in a traditional lager style, Longboard became a symbol of Hawaii’s easygoing lifestyle. It’s brewed today both in Hawaii and on the mainland, offering a taste of the islands far beyond the shoreline.

The Pour: Clean and Classic

When poured, Longboard Island Lager presents a crystal-clear, golden-straw color. It’s visually appealing with a modest white head that dissipates fairly quickly but leaves behind a thin ring of lacing.

Its clarity and carbonation are typical of a well-filtered lager. No surprises here — it looks exactly like what you’d expect from a beach-ready brew.

Taste and Aroma: Light, Crisp, and… Safe

The aroma is subdued — light grainy malt, a hint of biscuit, and just the faintest floral hop note. It’s clean and unoffensive but not particularly engaging.

In terms of taste, it follows through with a light, bready malt character and a slightly sweet edge. a whisper of lemony hop bitterness, but nothing that grabs your attention. The mouthfeel is light to medium with moderate carbonation, delivering a crisp and easy-drinking finish.

It’s not bad by any means — just very restrained.

My Verdict: 2.75 out of 5

As someone who enjoys exploring both bold craft beers and sessionable lagers, Longboard Island Lager feels like a missed opportunity. It’s crisp and refreshing, sure — but ultimately underwhelming. It plays it too safe, offering very little complexity or character to stand out.

That said, it does have its place. It’s a fine option for hot summer days, barbecues, or beach picnics where you want something light and inoffensive. But for craft beer lovers seeking depth or innovation, this one may fall flat.
