Morenos Fuga WC Pils Review – A Hoppy West Coast Pilsner

Time to cover another brew from the Beer52 Mexico Box and this is from Morenos, a brewery I have previously covered with their local lager. Today’s review is on Fuga which is a West Coast Pilsner. As stated in my previous review, Morenos offers a community focused feel into craft brewery especially considering their roots were brewing for family and friends. During the course of this review I will cover the history of this beer and brewery, the pour, the taste and aroma and finally my verdict

A brewery steeped in community

Cerveceria Morenos is craft brewery based in Mexico City, Mexico. Morenos was founded in 2017 by Ernesto and Rodrigo Mora, who began brewing beer in their mother’s garage. This began as one recipe and a 900l litre brewing capacity. Their goal was to create top-quality craft beer whilst sharing the passion with family and friends whilst growing the Mexican beer community.

As demand and popularity grew, they scaled up to 4,500 litres per month and today the brewery produces 35,000 litres per month. Although Morenos is best known for its hop-forward IPAs and pale ales, the brewery also produces approachable lagers designed for everyday drinking.

Fuga West Coast Pils takes inspiration from the hop forward West Coast style beer. At 5.5% ABV and is built around a clean malt base with a much more prominent hop profile than you would normally associate with a traditional Pilsner. This beer brings together bright citrus and pine notes, tropical fruit character and resinous hop bitterness, creating a bridge between classic lager brewing and contemporary American-inspired hop-forward beer.

A bright and golden pour

Fuga WC Pils pours a bright golden colour which has excellent clarity. The carbonation is lively, with plenty of tiny bubbles rising through the beer and helping to build a decent white head. The white head retains throughout most of the drinking experience and leaves a delicate amount of lacing. The appearance of this beer is clean and refreshing, offers an insight into this hoppy pilsner.

A hop forward flavour for a pils

Aroma

Morenos Fuga has a noticeably more hop forward aroma compared to other pilsners. There is a pronounced citrus note of grapefruit and lemon which is accompanied by subtle tropical fruit character. Beneath this, is the subtle pilsner malt notes you would expect with aromas of herbal hop notes alongside a cracker to grain edge. Overall, the aroma is fresh and vibrant, combining the clean malt character of a pilsner with a much more assertive hop presence than you would normally expect from the style.

Taste

From the first sip, you can see that this is a hop forward pilsner. It opens with bright citrus and tropical flavours of grapefruit, lemon and a touch of mango. The malt pilsner note gives this a familiar feel offering notes of cracker and biscuit, whilst also offering a delicate herbal bite making this relatively refreshing. The finish was dry, light and slightly crisp. Overall, an interesting pilsner which certainly is welcomed. It reminded me more of a cold IPA.

Time for my verdict

Overall, this is an interesting brew and I certainly rated this a lot better than the Lager Local. I feel ,although not necessarily what you expect from a pilsner, that adding a West Coast feel really buys into that craft beer spirit of craftsmanship and experimentation. If you are looking for a classic pilsner, this probably won’t be what you seek. I would recommend this as a Session West Coast IPA. Overall, I rate this a solid 3.75 out of 5. Give this a try.
