Morenos Local Lager Review – Crisp Mexican Craft Lager Worth Trying?

For my second review of this Beer52 Mexico box I am covering a Mexican lager by Morenos. Local Lager offers a sneak peak into the craft brewing culture of Mexico City and it touches on the community focus of this brewery. This is designed to be easy-drinking low-abv lager which is refreshing in a hot climate like Mexico. So during the course of the review I will cover the history of this beer and brewery, the pour, the taste and aroma, and finally my verdict.

A brewery for family and Mexico as a whole

Cerveceria Morenos is craft brewery based in Mexico City, Mexico. Morenos was founded in 2017 by Ernesto and Rodrigo Mora, who began brewing beer in their mother’s garage. This began as one recipe and a 900l litre brewing capacity. Their goal was to create top-quality craft beer whilst sharing the passion with family and friends whilst growing the Mexican beer community.

As demand and popularity grew, they scaled up to 4,500 litres per month and today the brewery produces 35,000 litres per month. Although Morenos is best known for its hop-forward IPAs and pale ales, the brewery also produces approachable lagers designed for everyday drinking.

Morenos Lager is 3.8% lager which was created as a nod to the fast paced lifestyle of Mexico City. It was designed to be a light-bodied, crisp and highly drinkable Mexican lager. Although this edition I had tried was a contract brew, it typically lies between 3.5%-4% and is hopped with Hallertauer Mittelfrüh hops which provides a delicate floral balance without overpowering the malt character. . Local Lager stands as one of the brewery’s most approachable beers, offering a clean, refreshing taste that reflects both traditional lager brewing and modern Mexican craft beer culture.

A lively lager pour

Local Lager pours a pale golden colour which is clear in clarity. A white bubbly head forms which is light but disappears pretty quickly, leaving little to no lacing. The carbonation is lively and fine bubbles consistently travels up the glass. Overall, it has some of the signs of a decent lager but the head does not last at all.

A light and clean flavour

Aroma

Morenos Local Lager opens with a light bready malt base which is accompanied by gentle notes of corn and grains. A subtle herbal note is detected from the hop character. The fermentation appears to be clean and the malt base is certainly what shines here. Overall, the aroma is subtle, refreshing and true to the Mexican lager style.

Taste

The first sip presents a soft bready malt flavour which adds a subtle sweetness along with notes grain and corn. The hop selection gives this a slight herbal to floral bitterness which does not overpower the malt base. The body is light and easy-drinking and the finish is clean and dry. Overall, a non complex average lager which has a role of being refreshing.

Time for my verdict

Overall, I love trying new beers as it allows you to procure a wide range of flavours. I also love craft beer as it allows you to experience beers from different cultures and how the needs differ around the world. Obviously, not every beer is going to blow your socks off, this lager didn’t do that. This was obviously a beer that would be refreshing in the hot climate of Mexico City but I found it quite average. I am unsure if I would have it again, but if you are a fan of Mexican lagers this most likely will be for you. Overall, I rate this 2.75 out of 5. Cheers
