Rigg & Furrow Weiß Review: A Northumbrian Take on a Classic Hefeweizen

Rigg & Furrow l, a family-run brewery located in the heart of rural Northumberland, has earned a reputation for crafting authentic, locally inspired beers. Their Weiß—a Bavarian-style Hefeweizen—blends traditional wheat beer character with a farmhouse ethos rooted in local ingredients and rustic brewing methods. But does it deliver? Here’s our full review.

Brewery Background: Rigg & Furrow’s Roots

Founded in 2017 by Theo and Pippa Howie, Rigg & Furrow transformed an old milking parlour on Acklington Park Farm into a fully functioning brewery. The name comes from the traditional “ridge and furrow” patterns found in nearby fields, symbolizing their deep connection to the land.

What makes this brewery stand out is its commitment to using locally grown ingredients, including Golden Promise barley from their own farm. They’re not afraid to experiment either—crafting everything from lagers and farmhouse ales to barrel-aged, wild-fermented ciders.

The Pour: Hazy, Golden, and Inviting

Rigg & Furrow Weiß pours a beautiful hazy golden yellow, topped with a thick, foamy white head that lingers and laces the glass well. The cloudiness is typical of the unfiltered Hefeweizen style, suggesting a rich mouthfeel and vibrant yeast character.

Aroma & Taste: Banana, Clove, and Farmhouse Elegance

Aroma: The nose is classic Hefeweizen—ripe banana, fresh clove, and a slight bubblegum sweetness all emerge from the glass thanks to the traditional yeast strain used. There’s also a faint rustic note that reminds you this is a farmhouse beer at heart.

Taste: On the palate, Rigg & Furrow Weiß is smooth and soft, with a wheat-forward body that gives it a creamy mouthfeel. Those banana and clove notes carry through, balanced by mild citrus acidity and a whisper of earthy spice. There’s minimal bitterness, allowing the yeast and malt to shine.

Verdict: A Standout Hefeweizen With Local Soul

Rigg & Furrow’s Weiß is a well-executed homage to the traditional German Hefeweizen, but with a subtle Northumbrian twist. It’s refreshing, flavorful, and perfect for spring and summer sipping. While it doesn’t reinvent the style, it delivers a highly satisfying drinking experience with artisanal flair.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
