If you’re a fan of classic Czech lagers with a bit of modern twist, Kutná Hora Zlatá 12 Chmelená Za Studena is one to try. This beer caught my eye not just because of its glowing reputation, but because of the rich brewing history behind it. And after tasting it? I can definitely say it lives up to the hype.
Here’s my full review — from its historical roots to the final sip.
A Quick Dive Into History: The Soul of Kutná Hora Brewery
Beer from Kutná Hora isn’t new — in fact, brewing in this Czech town dates all the way back to the 16th century. Official records show a brewery operating there since 1573, founded by none other than Václav Dačický z Heslova, a rather colorful Czech nobleman and poet.
The brewery became a staple of the region, producing traditional lagers like the Dačický and Mincmistr, and even bagging a medal at the Brussels World Exhibition in 1906. Fast forward a few centuries, and the brewery unfortunately fell into corporate hands (Heineken) and was shut down in 2010. That could’ve been the end.
But in a plot twist worthy of a Czech novel, local entrepreneurs brought the brewery back to life in 2017, restoring its historic premises and returning brewing to Kutná Hora. One of their flagship beers? This very one: Kutnohorská Zlatá 12, dry-hopped (chmelená za studena) for a modern kick on a traditional style.
The Pour: Looks as Good as It Tastes

Right out of the bottle, Zlatá 12 makes a strong visual impression. It pours a brilliant golden color, crystal-clear and sparkling with tight carbonation.
It’s everything you want from a Czech lager visually: bright, clean, and well-crafted. The carbonation is active but not aggressive, giving it that lively look without going overboard.
Taste & Aroma: Tradition Meets Modern Hop Character
On the nose, you’re greeted with freshly baked bread, subtle honey, and a touch of herbal spice. Thanks to the cold hopping with noble Czech hops like Saaz and Sládek, there’s a nice floral and grassy aroma, and a little citrus zip in the background — think lemon zest or herbal tea.
The first sip brings in a balanced malt sweetness, soft and biscuity. Then the hops kick in — not in-your-face bitter, but with a firm, clean bite that lingers nicely on the finish. There’s a slightly dry, spicy edge (probably the Sládek at work), which gives this lager a bit more complexity than your average 12° pale.
I even picked up some faint mineral tones toward the end — not off-putting at all, but a nice nod to the brewery’s old-world roots and traditional brewing methods. This beer is unfiltered and cold-conditioned, so it finishes crisp and clean without feeling too sterile.
My Verdict: 4.25/5
All in all, Kutná Hora Zlatá 12 Chmelená Za Studena is a beautifully executed Czech lager that strikes a fine balance between authentic tradition and modern craft character.
If you’re into beers that showcase true lager craftsmanship—clean malt, noble hops, subtle complexity—this one’s for you. The cold hopping gives it a fresh edge without losing that smooth, sessionable feel that Czech lagers are known for.
I’d give it a solid 4.25 out of 5. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel — and that’s exactly what makes it special. Just quality ingredients, time-tested methods, and a little extra flair with the hops.
