Whilst doing my obligatory browse of the beer section whilst getting a bit of shopping in, this hazy IPA really caught my attention. Brew York’s Time Travelling Taxi really caught my attention because A)it is a hazy Ipa which i am a sucker for and B) it has a extremely eye catching name. This in truth reminded me of the old Playstation 2 game called Crazy Taxi for some reason. On the can it illustrates ‘full of punchy hops and refreshing zesty citrus’ and during the review I will reveal whether it lived up to the quote or if it was another supermarket dud. I will cover the history of the beer and brewery, the pour, the taste and aroma and finally the verdict which you will undoubtedly be eager to find out… or not.
A stroll through the York based brewery and it’s Gold rated SIBA beer.
Brew York was founded in 2016 and is one of the key pillars of craft beer in York. Originally, founded by hobbyists who had a passion for craft beer and home brewing. The taproom and beer is located within York’s historic walls and they expanded to a twin 30-barrel facility to meet the ever growing demand Brew York face.
Adding to a signature range consisting of Juice Forsyth and Coney, Time Travelling Taxi is described as an Hazy IPA which double dry hopped making it core option in their lineup. In 2024, this award winning pale ale was crowned category champion in the bottled and canned beer between 4.5% and 5.5% ABV at the SIBA Independent Beer Awards. Boosting the beers and Brew Yorks credibility amongst the Craft Beer scene.
Taken from Brew York’s website, Time Travelling Taxi pays homage to the feeling of ‘Anyone experiencing the time jumping taxi that arrives a minute after the map indicated it to be ten minutes away (usually after ordering a beer)?
Or maybe you recall the time distorting taxi that started two minutes away yet doesn’t arrive for twenty minutes! Maybe it was better when our taxis were always ‘just around the corner’!’ This shows Brew Yorks consistent playful nature especially when it comes to creating serious beers.
A pour typical of a Hazy IPA
Pouring the time skipping phenomenon beer, you will notice a hazy pale yellow to light straw colour which is typical of an eye-catching hazy IPA. A foamy head rises up which is moderate in size and lingers as you consume the glowing nectar. When I was done, I noticed a distinct lacing around the glass. The appearance is very much appealing to anyone who is a fan of hazy and/or New England IPAs.
Now onto the Taste and Aroma
Bursting with citrus and tropical fruit aroma, I was taken aback by how intense this was when I opened the can. Of course, this is not bad thing as if there was no aroma I would be worried. On the nose, I noticed hints of grapefruit, lemon and pineapple which was also uplifted by a distinct mango smell. My overall impression from the aroma was that is was going to be a light, juicy and refreshing DDH Pale.
Leaning into to take my first sip, I immediately tasted tropical fruits especially from the likes of grapefruit and mango which was immediately followed by what I think is bitter orange. It was almost oat like smooth and the hops gave this a desired dry bitterness which lingered afterwards. This is definitely a beer which knows the fine balance between sweet and fruity ,and dry and bitter. This appears to live up to the quote on Brew York’s website.
Now, it is time my verdict on this easy drinking IPA
Overall, I feel this beer was a success especially for a supermarket beer which often leaves a lot to be desired. Brew York is renowned for its levels of quality and this one bolsters its reputation. This is juicy and vibrant ale which also I would say is quite session able although at 5.4% maybe slightly dangerous. I think the only improvement I would suggest would maybe increase the percentage of this Ale ,as I really feel the bite of a 7+% may take this to the next level. However, this earns a 4 out of 5 from me and I would really come back to this as it was smooth and refreshing, really living up to what a proper Hazy IPA should be.
