As you know, If there is a new brewery to try I usually opt for a New England IPA. This beer by Fell Brewery is no exception. Lawyers, Guns and Money is a playfully named beer which has a lot of character looking at just the can. During the course of this beer review I will be looking into whether this character translates across to the beer itself. So, sit back and relax whilst I cover the history of this brewery and beer, the pour, the taste and aroma and finally what I thought of this hazy beverage.
Background on Lawyers, Guns & Money
Fell Brewery is an independent craft beer brewery based in South Cumbria, on the Cartmel Peninsula. Founded by Tim Bloomer and Andrew Carter, they started out in 2013 with modest intentions but quickly gained a loyal following. From the outset, sustainability has been at the heart of Fell’s philosophy. Their brewery operations are designed to have a positive environmental impact, and they emphasise community, creativity, and responsibility in equal measure.
Over the years, Fell has operated numerous bars including Kendal, Penrith, Chorlton, Northern Quarter Manchester, Royal Oak Cartmel and currently in construction is their Stockport taproom. They adopt a passionate and friendly work culture, especially when I visited the Kendal taproom.
The beer itself is based on a Warren Zevon song called Lawyers, Guns & Money. This gives the beer a lot more charm and character. This NEIPA carries an ABV of 5.9% which is hopped using Cascade, Ella, Citra Cryo and Sabro Cryo. All of which is famous for giving beers a juicy and tropical complex. Lawyers, Guns & Money is also vegan friendly which fits into Fell’s inclusivity goals.
A juicy pour
Lawyers, Guns & Money pours a hazy golden orange colour which is exactly what a hazy New England IPA is supposed to do. It has a glowing opaque look which is vibrant and dense. A foamy white head forms which leaves a gentle amount of lacing down the glass. The carbonation is moderate with the beer being more soft than anything. Overall, a typically inviting hazy IPA.
A juicy flavour from Fell Brewery
Aroma
When opened on the nose you can notice that Lawyers, Guns & Money opens with an explosion of tropical fruit which includes mango, pineapple and ripe peach. The addition of Citra hops gives it a slight orange and grapefruit feel. There is a gentle floral lift towards the end of the smell. Overall, a juicy and flavourful aroma.
Taste
The taste accurately follows on from the aroma which operates juicy and tropical flavour profile. You get slapped by the addition of mango and pineapple. This has a malt backbone which adds a bit of balance to this beer whilst also ensuring it is not too heavy. Mid palate the citrus tingles as the addition of grapefruit and orange give it more depth. There is soft coconut flavour followed by a gentle bitterness from the Cascade hops. This is one of those beers that are incredibly light, dry and follow of flavour that could be session-able but you would end up carrying me home afterwards. This beer glided down the hatch as it was juicy, smooth and delicious beers.
Time for my verdict
This beer was delicious, I absolutely loved it. This was sooo smooth that it glided down and the depth of flavour was immense. This has to be one of my favourite New England IPAs I have consumed year. My only regret is not trying more from Fell Brewery whilst I was visiting the Kendal taproom. Top notch, my verdict is a 4.75 out of 5. Lovely beer and I hope to try more in the future.
Where did I purchase this beer?
I bought this whilst visiting the Fell Bar in Kendal. I originally had a pint of their Session IPA which was delicious. I believe this can cost around £5, I could be wrong but it was worth every penny. One of the staff members told me I had made a good choice when picking a beer.
