North East Beer Review

I am quite the fan of Schöfferhofer having tried quite a few flavours now ranging from the OG grapefruit to pomegranate and the actual Wheatbeer itself. I often go for a Schöfferhofer as a nice light and refreshing can when I am not necessarily in a DIPA mood if that makes sense. The style is usually a mixture of wheat beer and juice and for this review the juice in question is lemon. So what did I rate it? To find out I will first cover the history of this beer and brewery. One hundred and fifty years of tradition

Schöfferhofer is a German wheat beer with roots in Frankfurt, Germany and it has quite the reputation for its hefeweizen and fruity wheat beers. The name “Schöfferhofer” comes from the former house of Peter Schöffer who was famous 15th century printer who worked alongside Johaness Guttenberg in Mainz. His iconic image is used by Schöfferhofer to show their German heritage roots and identity.

The brand became internationally famous after launching Schöfferhofer Grapefruit in 2007, a mix of Hefeweizen beer and grapefruit juice. The success of that drink led to other citrus variations, including Schöfferhofer Lemon, which combines wheat beer with lemonade for a light and refreshing taste. Today, Schöfferhofer is owned by the Radeberger Gruppe, one of Germany’s largest brewing groups, and the beer is exported around the world.

Schöfferhofer Lemon is part of the brands radler selection which often adorns an ABV of 2.5% and is unfiltered. This is fruit infused and happens to be great to drink doing a spell of warm weather.

A smooth pour

The pour of Schöfferhofer is a typically pale yellow with a wheat beer haze. With how lively the beer is, a thick, foamy white head forms but gradually fades throughout the drinking session. This beer is quite lively but this gives it a refreshing glow that makes you want to grab it when you are feeling the most thirsty.

An unsurprising flavour profile

Aroma

Schöfferhofer Lemon has a very citrus forward aroma particularly that of lemon, no surprise there. Beneath the obvious citrus flavour, a wheat and malty light sweetness is apparent along with the slight yeast flavour you would expect from a German wheat beer. Overall, this is sweet, clean and crisp.

Taste

The taste of the fruity wheat beer is sweet and refreshing. Lemon flavours are bright and dominant with the wheat beer notes mellowing out the citrus bitterness. This has a fizzy mouthfeel which also being smooth going down. The finish is clean and tangy. Overall, this an easy to drink and refreshing drink which is not over complicated.

Time for my verdict

Right, the first thing I have to ask myself is, Is this flavour of Schöfferhofer the best I have had? No, grapefruit, pineapple and pomegranate are tastier in my opinion. Does this still taste nice and do the job? Yes, the job being refreshing and easy drinking. I am happy I tried this version of Schöfferhofer and I still found it tasty. I feel if you like Schöfferhofer you will be a fan of this flavour. Overall, I rate this 3.75 out of 5. Cheers
