Recently, I tried my first beer from Thirsty Moose Brewing Co called Hazy Hinny. I was so impressed I had to try some more of this brewery. So, when I saw this pilsner in Rare Drop in Low Fell, I decided to pick it up to try. Based in Blaydon-on-Tyne, this is something I was very keen to try. During the course of this review, I will cover the history of this brewery, the pour, the taste and aroma and finally, my verdict. Cheers 🍻
Supporting a local brewery
Situated in the Galaxy Park in Blaydon-on-Tyne, Thirsty Moose Brewing Co first brewed in August 2022. This is a family run microbrewery which pride themselves as being ‘North East brewers with Canadian heritage’. Thirsty Moose Brewing Co specialises in small batch brewing which allows them to give each beer the attention and detail it deserves. I think their flagship beer is Canny Canuck which is a maple Brown Ale.
The Full Mountie Canadian Pilsner is one of Thirsty Moose Brewing Co’s newer releases. It markets itself as having ‘a crisp malt backbone, floral herbal hops and a refreshing finish’. An ABV of 4.5% also accompanies this beer. This pilsner has an extremely cool can design which is embellished with the stunning mountain ranges found in parts of Canada and a member of the Canadian Mounties. The Canadian Mounties are Canada’s national police force which are known for their iconic red uniform. The name Full Mountie appears to be a play on the term ‘full monty’ which is a British term for everything that is desired or necessary, which could be a nod to the pilsner doing everything a pilsner is meant to do.
A golden pilsner pour
When poured, it is immediately noticeable the caramel to almost golden straw colour which is iconic to the type of beer this is. It is clear and bright with no cloudiness at all. It is quite a lively beer in terms of carbonation. Now onto the head, unfortunately there wasn’t one however that may be due to the pint glass I used. Overall, this is a very typical looking pilsner which is still inviting.
The Full Mountie in taste, the Full Mountie in aroma
As soon as you crack open the can, you can’t help but notice the floral and slightly herbal scents from the hops. A subtle maltiness can be observed which I thought was quite bready which also gave it a sweet undertone. Honestly, the typical hallmarks of a decent pilsner.
From the first sip, you can immediately taste the bitterness from the hops which gave an almost earthy feel as you are hit with the floral tastes. Similar to the aroma, there was bready maltiness which was slightly sweet which made this a well balanced pilsner. The finish was crisp and clean which made this an extremely refreshing beverage. In relation to mouthfeel, this was smooth and light bodied which I feel would make this session able. This beer definitely does what it is meant to do, the Full Mountie. Overall, a very pleasant and refreshing pilsner.
Time for my verdict
This is a beer that does exactly what it is meant to do. It is crisp, clean, hoppy and refreshing. The Full Mountie, you can tell has had the time and effort put in as it was very fresh and delicious. This would be a great choice if I was wanting to have a sessionable pils. Overall, this is a very good pilsner that I would recommend trying if you like to support local family run microbreweries such as Thirsty Moose. Finally, I rate this a solid 4 out of 5 as this does exactly what it says on the tin, the only thing I would say to improve is the lack of head however this doesn’t impact the flavour profile of the Canadian Pilsner at all, top notch.

I purchased the Thirsty Moose Brewing Co Full Mountie Canadian Pilsner from a shop called Rare Drop in Low Fell, Gateshead. This shop specialises in promoting North East based business. Calvin who runs The Rare Drop was so kind and helpful that I would recommend anyone nearby to stop off and check them out. I think this cost around £4.50ish.
