During my visit to Whitley Bay with my girlfriend, I visited Hazy Daze taproom and bottle shop. As I was picking a beer to take home with me, I noticed a beer which supports a good cause. This one is called Two by Two Brewing and Hazy Daze Save Our School IPA which was created to help save Monkseaton Middle School. The aim of this initiative to donate £1 from every can sale to Save Monkseaton Middle School. I really like supporting local initiatives no matter where they are located in the country. So, during the course of this review I will cover the history of this beer, brewery and the community cause it supports, the pour, the taste and aroma and my verdict.
Local craft beer scene collaborates for a good cause.
To begin, Two by Two brewing was founded in Wallsend and now based in Byker, Newcastle. The brewery started as a cockoo brewery which means it used other breweries facilities to brew their beers however in 2014, Two by Two opened their own brewing facility.
Two by Two Brewing built a reputation for unfiltered, unfined ales which are juicy and hop forward in character. As well as their community efforts across the Tyneside area. The founder Rob Macleod, homed his skills from working in pubs and embracing both traditional cask ales and craft beers. He went from brewing training straight to setting up his own brewery.
Two by Two brewing are now known to produce many styles of ales which of course includes hazy and new england style IPAs which have become their hallmark.
Hazy Daze is a craft beer shop which is located in the glorious Spanish City in Whitley Bay, in the North Eastern coast. Founded in 2021, from a lockdown dream to a welcoming space for craft beer enjoys. Hazy Daze is a family run and dog friendly taproom and beer shop which specialise in local and national craft beers such as Full Circle, Two by Two and Deya. Their aim is to create a comfortable community spirit within their shop.
The ‘Save Monkseaton Middle School’ campaign is a community effort to save the Monkseaton Middle School which was due to be closed by North Tyneside Council in September 2027 as part of educational changes. The change would impact students at Monkseaton Middle School and Hazlewood Community Primary which specialises in support of children with Special Needs. Many felt that the school was vital part of the community’s identity and may negatively impact children in the area.
The campaign began with organised protests, leaflet campaigns, public meetings and a social media push. Fundraising took place such as Mr G’s 8 mile shuffle dance which aimed to raise funds and awareness. Online petitions branched from this to oppose the closure. As of late 2025, the council paused closure plans and alternatives are due to be discussed.
This Save our School IPA is a beer that I like as it supports a positive cause and made an impact in preventing a closure. This beer is a soft, juicy and tropical hopped hazy IPA which carries an ABV of 4.7% which makes it sessionable and full of flavour.
A hazy and smooth pour

Save our School IPA presents an opaque pale golden to orange colour which glows in the light. This is a typical New England IPA style beer. The head is creamy and white which lasted throughout the session. Lacing is present the more you drink. The carbonation is moderate with fine bubbles which add to the haze. Overall, the presentation of this beer is inviting and juicy in appearance which makes you want to jump in for a sip.
An earthy and juicy taste and aroma.
Aroma
On the nose, Two by Two Brewing X Hazy Daze Save Our School IPA delivers an inviting burst of hop forward juiciness with notes of mango, pineapple and peach. This is supported by citrus peel such as orange and lemon. There is a subtle sweet malt backbone which balances more than overpower the hops. A gentle earthiness is present which gives the IPA an extra layer of depth. Overall, a clean and juicy aroma.
Taste
The first sip of this IPA was juicy with flavours which imitate the aroma. Tropical fruits and citrus zests are present such as mango, pineapple and peach and not forgetting orange. The malt base again is similar to the aroma which is light but present which has gives the beer an extra layer of sweetness. Bitterness is apparent but not overpowering before being met by a clean and dry finish. Save our School IPA is a balanced IPA which despite the ABV was packed with bold flavour. A typical Two by Two Brewing brew.
Time for my verdict
I think it is great to see the Craft Beer scene support their local communities and this one is great in the Whitley Bay and Monkseaton area. £1 from each can sold by Hazy Daze which is extremely helpful to the cause of ‘Save Monkseaton Middle School’. I really recommend you buy a can in order to support this local campaign. In terms of this beer, it was really delicious and it was exactly what a New England IPA should do. It was packed with tropical hop forward bold flavour. The opaque nature looked amazing and presented an inviting image to anyone who would crack open a can. Overall, I rate Two by Two Brewing x Hazy Daze Save our School IPA a 4.25 out of 5.
