A new brewery for myself is Tūn Brewing Co. A brewery I have personally heard a lot from and have seen advertised across Instagram, Facebook and by other beer reviewers. Finally, I saw one of my local craft beer shops selling it, namely The Rare Drop in Low Fell, Gateshead. So I decided to give Tūn a try, by purchasing Quaternity an 8.3% Double IPA. So, during the course of this review I will be covering the short but rapidly expanding history of Tūn, the history of this beer, the pour, the taste and aroma and finally my verdict. Cheers
Born in 2024 to challenge UK drinking culture
Tūn Brewing Co is a craft brewery based in Manchester which was founded by passionate brewer and former Psychiatrist Richard Alston. The name Tūn is a play on the old english wording for settlement or community which happens to make up the core principle of the brewery. It also nods to traditional brewing equipment such as Mash Tuns, cementing the connection between brewer and community.
Richard had a vision to bring people together, which is done by creating beers. The mission was to challenge the drinking culture in UK. This was achieved by turning a hobby of brewing into a brewery that lays the foundation for purposeful brewing through quality and meaning.
Tūn Brewing Co currently utilises a contract brewing model by partnering with established breweries to produce batch of their beer. However, there is plans for Tūn to open a dedicated brewery and taproom in Chorlton, Manchester as part of its long term strategy. However, in the short term Tūn has already left its marked on the craft beer scene as it has won several awards at World Beer Awards which is an illustration to the quality of their beers and Tūn’s rapid ascension from its founding in 2024.
Tūn Brewing Co Quaternity is one of the bigger releases which debuted at the Independent Salford Beer Festival in November 2025. Packing a punch, this double IPA carries an ABV of 8.3%. It is brewed using a mix boil hops (Flex), Hop stand (El Dorado, Simcoe and Citra) and Dry hop (Cryo Mosaic, Simcoe and Citra). As well as using malts such as extra pale malted barley, light Munich malted barley, torrefied wheat, torrefied oats and Cara pils malted barley. It also brews using yeast called US-05.
Quaternity is named after Carl Jung’s concept of balance and completeness where four elements come together to create a whole. According to THE BRITISH GUILD OF BEER WRITERS, this is from the water, hops, yeast and malts. This extends to the mission of Tūn Brewing Co to create a meaningful beer which judging by the ingredients, extends to quality aspect too.
A rich and inviting pour
When poured, Quaternity shows a relatively hazy golden to light amber colour which somewhat glows. This was opaque which hints to the high hop load of this beer. A bubbly white head formed which was dense and persistent. A light lacing remains down to the glass which in my opinion is a great identifier of a fresh beer. Overall, Quaternity presents a very refreshing and rich pour which is extremely inviting.
A juicy and hoppy taste and aroma
Aroma
On the back of the can, the DIPA suggests that this beer has a strawberry, stonefruit and passionfruit aroma. I feel this is accurate as I definitely identified aromas of stonefruit i.e peach and apricot. As well as tropical hints of passionfruit and fresh mango. A citrus zest and pine edge was apparent too. A malt backbone partnering with the former allows this beer to have an extra degree of depth and prevent a one dimensional aroma. Overall, this an inviting and hop forward aroma which is exactly what you would expect from a modern DIPA.
Taste
When it comes to the tasting experience, Tūn Brewing Quaternity is hop forward and bursting with flavour. The taste basically echoes the aroma which flavours of tropical fruits and citrus which specifically includes grapefruit and mango. This is supported by a malt sweetness which offers balance to hop forward nature as opposed to overpowering the experience. The bitterness from the alcohol level is well integrated into Quaternity, offering warmth to the drink. Overall, this is a deeply forward but balanced DIPA which is smooth, soft and dry. A very pleasant sipper.
Time for my verdict
To start with, the introduction to this brewery is about as good as its gets. Quaternity really impressed me with its depth of flavour and perfectly balanced. I feel the mission and ethos of this brewery is perfectly exemplified in the brewing Quaternity. I will definitely be looking out for some others from Tūn especially Gem State of Mind. Overall, I rate this beer this gem as brilliant 4.75 out of 5. Cheers

I bought this from Rare Drop in Low Fell, Gateshead. This shop specialises in promoting North East based business. Calvin who runs The Rare Drop was so kind and helpful that I would recommend anyone nearby to stop off and check them out. I think this cost around £5.50.
